The TRE has been developed to enable the safe and secure storage of healthcare data, whilst enabling access for research institutions in a compliant manner.

This protects the integrity of sensitive patient information, whilst facilitating its use for research purposes. This solution enables better integration between medical and research institutions, subsequently driving new health-related insights and innovations.

This vision, underpinned by a combination of dedicated hardware infrastructure, is configured as three distinct zones:

INTEROPERABILITY

Secure gateways allow the ingestion of data sets (in multiple formats) into the TRE platform; whether across HSCN, via the internet, or via private connection. Integration engines can provide direct interoperability with healthcare systems, providing flexibility for an array of client needs.

INTEROPERABILITY

DATA PROVISIONING

Combining ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ storage with standard compute resources for running typical processing tasks, this zone can accommodate the use of machine learning, as well as access to a high-performance compute cluster (HPC) for the parallel processing of data.

DATA PROVISIONING

ANALYTICS

The analytics zone facilitates researcher access to approved healthcare data in a secure and managed way. Through multi-factor authentication and end-to-end encryption, reports or visualisations can be exported via a ‘digital airlock’ – preserving/protecting the sensitive information within the data sets.
